What a Letter or Story Can Do
The Mother’s letters and stories are more than entertainment. They are our history and our education. They tell us who we are meant to be and what we are capable of.
No textbook taught us how a woman raised nine children on a laundress’s wages, or what she said to her son the night he came home with his pride broken. No course covered which hymn carried her through the hospital, or how she kept a family fed through a winter when the plant closed. That knowledge lived in her and passed from her to us at the kitchen table, in the car, on the porch at dusk. When she is gone, it goes with her unless someone writes it down.
So these letters are a record. They hold what happened to us and how we came through it. A child who reads them learns that the strength in her own blood has already carried people through worse. She learns what we expect of each other, what we will not accept, and what we are capable of. That is a history, and a curriculum.
Read them for the laugh or the comfort. But know that something else is happening too. The Mother is handing you what she knows.
A story or letter may find you on an ordinary Tuesday, moving through your week, not thinking too hard about anything. Or it may find you at exactly the moment when the weight of the world is heavier than you can bear. When you are tired in a way that sleep does not fix, when you cannot quite remember what you are doing it all for and can’t see an end to the struggle.
It might make you laugh. It might make you cry in the good way, the kind that loosens something inside you and allows you to breathe easy and relax. It might feel like you did when you laid your head in your grandmother’s lap during church, when you were held and nothing bad in the world could touch you.
And maybe, after reading, you go back to your day a little different. A little taller. A little more clear about who you are and what you come from. A little more ready to be the parent your child deserves.
Maybe it helps you see the better version of yourself, the one that has been there all along, waiting for you to stop listening to the world and start listening to your heart. Strong enough to put down what you have been using to get through the pain. The drinking. The drugs. The sex that fills the time without filling the emptiness. The slow ways we hurt ourselves when we have forgotten who we are.
She did not go through what she went through so you could waste what she handed you.
Her letters and stories may not fix your life. But the right one, at the right time, will remind you that you come from a people who fixed theirs under conditions you will never face. She did it for you. Return her love by doing it for yourself.
